Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York the 27th October, 1923. A syou can see below he was becoming famous for his pop art pictures. At first glance one may say, that everyone can do something like that and that new art is only for the ones who can not draw properly. But wait a moment - Lichtenstein was a highly talented artist who spend a lot of his early years with studies and earned at the end a M.F.A. degree from the Ohio State University.  In 1961 Lichtenstein began his first pop paintings using cartoon images and techniques derived from the appearance of commercial printing. This phase would continue to 1965, and included the use of advertising imagery suggesting consumerism and homemaking. His first work to feature the large-scale use of hard-edged figures and Ben-Day dots was Look Mickey (1961) In the same year he produced six other works with recognizable characters from gum wrappers and cartoons. also in 1961 gallery owner Leo Castelli started displaying Lichtenstein's work at his gallery in New York .
Lichtenstein had his first one-man show at the Castelli gallery in 1962; the entire collection was bought by influential collectors before the show even opened. It is reported that Andy Warhol also had done some comic paintings to display in the galery but when he saw the work of Lichtenstein he recognized the quality of this art and left this genre to Roy. Later his style varies and changes but as you will notice, everyone knows him for his comic pictures - curse or blessing?
